Crafted in Japan A + 6 digitsĢ007 was another transitional year for Japanese-made Fender instruments, with the return to the “Made in Japan” country-of-origin identifier on the serial number decal. The model number: was inconsistently stamped as a prefix or suffix: to the serial number. In the new line of 1947, all models were given: a model number and a name. All other instruments: were identified by a model number only. In 1997, Fender transitioned to a serial number decal that included the words “Crafted in Japan” above the serial number. top archtop guitar models (De Luxe, Solist: and Royal), some early lutes, and some fancier: banjo models had names.

As always, serial numbers should only be used as a guide for dating and should be used in combination with known age-related specifications to help identify the production year of an instrument. Records on early Japanese-made Fender instruments are not complete and are therefore not completely definitive for dating purposes. The first 3 digits are the day of the year, the next two are the number in that days production, and the last digit is the year. The serial number itself will give you date. All guitars made before 2003 will have the six digit code. You can look up a serial number either in Gruhns Guide or run the number in the manufacturers database.
